Alcoholism and addiction are widespread problems that reach everyone.

The Facts

Excessive alcohol use is responsible for 100,000 deaths annually. Alcohol related car crashes are the number one killer of teenagers.

Illicit drug use directly results in 16,000 deaths annually. This estimate is conservative as substance abuse is indirectly associated with deaths from HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, homicides and other violent crimes and incidental injuries.

Alcohol abuse costs nearly $166 Billion each year to the United States economy.

Drug abuse problem costs to the US economy exceed $114 Billion annually.

Half the patients in emergency rooms are there as the direct or indirect effect of alcohol or substance abuse.

More than 75% of domestic violence victims report that their assailant had been drinking or using illicit drugs at the time of the incident.

60% of hospital room stays are the result of alcohol or substance abuse or psychiatric distress caused by them.

Alcohol or drug abusers are 3 1/2 times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident and 5 times more likely to file a workmen's compensation claim.

Best estimates place the incidence of alcoholism or drug addiction among adults at between fifteen and twenty-five percent.

Addiction is a Family Disease

Few families are not directly or indirectly affected by alcoholism or addiction. ESRF also hosts 12-Step meetings for the family members of recovering alcoholics and substance abusers.

Recovery Works

A Fortune 100 company found that its average annual medical costs for employees with substance abuse problems dropped from $2,068 to $165 after the employees began substance abuse treatment.

A study showed a 24% decrease in health care costs for a group of treated alcoholics in comparison with an untreated group.

Substance abuse treatment reduces overall hospital admission rates by at least 38%.

Studies have shown that for every $1.00 spent on drug treatment, society gains $7.66 in monetary benefits.
